17 Mar Round Pond
grape: Sauvignon Blanc
region: California, Napa, Rutherford
Round Pond Winery is a lovely estate in the Rutherford AVA, which is
located right in the middle of the larger Napa Valley. This sub-region
of Napa is home to many famed vineyards, including Caymus, Beaulieu
Vineyards, Cakebread, Honig, Frog’s Leap and Rubicon Estate. Nestled
in between Caymus and Beaulieu, Round Pond is well on their way in
establishing a tradition of making prize wines.
This lush estate is owned by the MacDonnell family, where the 2nd
generation brothers are managing partners. Not only does the estate
grow vines to produce fabulous estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, but they have extensive gardens, citrus and olive orchards they use to produce olives, olive oil and citrus syrups. This beautiful estate is certainly worth a visit during your next Napa excursion!
A representative from the winery visited Wine + Market a few weeks back to sample Round Pond juice. I was impressed with the entire lineup, and I thought it would be fun to choose the Sauvignon Blanc for Wine Club to help usher in the spring season!
Round Pond claims that this wine was made “in 100% stainless steel with no malolactic processing to retain the freshness and purity of our Estate fruit. The fruit and resulting juice has explosive flavors, flashy acidity…” I completely agree, and I really enjoyed the fresh and expressive aromas and flavors of verbena, guava, clover blossom and fresh cut grass.
Although this is a fuller bodied Sauvignon Blanc, this wine would do best with more delicate dishes, to help highlight the fresh pretty flavors. Try with fresh herb salads or delicate to medium bodied fish accompanied with a citrus or herb sauce.
